-====================================================================-
Welcome to the Files System on this BBS!
-====================================================================-
This bulletin is to give you some clues to the structure
of the files areas of this system.
REMEMBER:
All GOOD Bulletin Board Systems are dependant on the quality
and quantity of the real communications that take place on it.
Files attract and support users' interests and desires for
good and inexpensive software but without good messages - the
system tends to fizzle..... we are in your hands.
I do not demand that users upload software.... we all know
that it is likely that I have much of what is available
currently. It is nice to receive a copy of a favorite of
yours to check out for myself.... but download at will and
remember me often.
This is only a community service.... you support it - it stays.
Since this is not a commercial or "subscription-required" system, we
voluntarily depend on the generosity of our users to keep this system
in full operation. Since we are a part of the FidoNet International
Electronic Mail Network, we have a VERY large files resource and can
bring in any number of recent files from over 3000 other systems. We
are fully willing to do so as long as those who request are also
willing to share the phone expense to do so.
There are several different file areas here and you will be able to
download files from the very first call. The number of areas you will
be able to access are dependant upon the contribution you make to this
system.
Unless you cannot do otherwise, never use ASCII protocol - it has no
error checking. With error correcting protocols like Xmodem, a
calculation is made on the BLOCK of data that is about to be sent, the
result of that calculation is sent with the block. Your system would do a
fast calculation and compare the results to the one sent. If the results
do not match, this system will re-send that block until it is "ACK" -
acknowledged as received. Note that CRC method of error checking is
available in most standard protocols. It is a stronger method of error
correction and is an option.
If you have a software package like TELIX, you have SEALINK protocol
available and may use it here. SEALINK is an advanced Xmodem system that
automatically sends the original Filename, Filesize, Filedate, etc.
before sending the file. It allows you to have all the original file
info instead of having to have a new date on an older file etc. SEALINK
allows you to request more than one file at a time on a command line.
SEALINK, TELINK, YMODEM, ZMODEM are all advanced file transfer protocols
that send total file data intact. Zmodem is the fastest and most advanced.
Most of the files here are in ZIP (ARCHIVE) format ... you must have an
MS-DOS system and a copy of PKXZIP to unpack these files. An ZIP
file may contain several files inside as a library. When a file is
ZIPed, it is analyzed for ability to compress it down to a smaller size
and then stored in the ZIP file appropriately. ZIPing files cuts down on
storage volume requirements and speeds transmissions on downloads.
We hope that this little bit of info has been of some support to you in
your modeming. If this has helped please leave a note in message area 1.
Please remember that it is considered BAD MANNERS to use another's
system without stopping to say thanks or, at least "Hello" in public -
you may have friends here and would never know unless you speak up. Your
comments on the structure and quality of this system is ESSENTIAL!
** Very Important! **
